Objective
“Two
roads diverged in a yellow wood...” scribbled Robert Frost on a piece of paper
in the year 1916, without knowing that
this line would lead a girl into a road of bright and new horizons almost a
century later. “The Road not Taken” was the very first poem I got introduced to
in my 'Introduction to Literature' course, and right at that moment, I knew that
literature was the road I wanted to walk along. I knew that this would be a
“Long and Winding Road”, as the Beatles say; however, I was determined to
pursue it.
In
order to follow my road, I took many courses on literature such as 'Introduction to Literature’, ‘English Literature I’,
‘English Literature II’, ‘Drama Analysis’, ‘Modern Drama’, ‘The Novel: Analysis and Teaching II’ , and
‘A Survey of German Literature’ . Thanks to these courses, I got the chance to
analyze the works of many writers, poets, and playwrights. With each and every
piece written by authors ranging from Blake to Ionesco, or Brecht to Chekhov; I
broadened my notion and vision of the world around me. Interestingly, the more
I learned about different types of cultures, the more I realized that we are
actually the same in nature. I realized that I was not the only one who was
facing a typical type of situation, or entrapped by a familiar sentiment. “It
is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible
to the eye.” says Antoine de Saint Exupéry. Literature must to be looking
through the eyes of a universal heart to be able to touch so many people all
around the world. With this feature of its, literature became a passion for me.
Exactly
because of this reason, my road leads me to a Master's Degree in the field of
American Literature. I have spent many hours on continues readings for my
courses so far, however, I am rather sure that there are still quite a lot of
writers and works of art to discover. Exploring new and rich backyards of
cultures, which I call 'literature', has always been my desire. This is,
indeed, what triggers my motivation to pursue my road winding into the United
States of America. The U.S. is a rather multi-cultural country, which will enable
me to have a broader understanding of the attitude of different types of
cultures towards literature. In this sense, getting to know the culture where
the types of works of art I am familiar with emerge is of great importance for
me. The supervision of American professors, again, will surely contribute to my
self-actualization in this direction quite remarkably.
I
wish the destination of the road I am planning to trod in to be my learners in
my home country, which is Turkey. I wish to function as a guide, or as a so
called bridge between cultures. Upon completing my Master's program in the
United States of America, I intend to return back to Turkey for my PhD Degree.
I have the aim of conveying my knowledge of the American culture and my
academic experiences to the future learners. In order to achieve this, I would
try to make the most of every single opportunity to get an insight into the
American culture, and in return, I would represent both my Turkish and German
background in the best way I can.
“Two
roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, and that has
made all the difference.” is the line ending Robert Frost's poem. I hope my
choice will enable me to make a difference in my own way as well.
